Apple News for Publishers in 2026: How to Get In, How the Money Works, and Whether It Is Worth It
Publisher In a Box8 min read
Table of Contents
If you are weighing Apple News, you want three answers: can you get in, what will it cost your team in effort, and does anyone actually read it. Apple publishes more of the answers than most platforms, so this guide sticks to Apple's own pages, adds what publishers have said on the record, and ends with a plain verdict on who the channel suits.
The short version is that Apple News is a reach and revenue channel inside Apple's app, not a way to send readers to your website. For some publishers that is exactly right. For a publisher whose business is ad revenue on its own site, it is a different trade, and worth understanding before you build for it.

How a publisher gets onto Apple News
Apple's developer documentation states the first step: "Before you can publish content to Apple News, you must submit information about your publication and samples of your content to the Apple News team." In practice that means registering in News Publisher, creating a channel, and submitting the channel and sample content for review. Apple decides whether to accept it, so there is a review, not an automatic listing.
The format question is where a small team should think hardest. Apple's tooling centers on Apple News Format, a structured format that Apple describes as easy for computers to work with and easy for people to read. You can publish in it through News Publisher directly, through the Apple News API, or through a plug-in that connects your content management system. Apple's own program page still refers to RSS feeds for publishers outside its main markets that do not publish in Apple News Format, but the features that matter for money, such as the advertising options and the subscription program, are built around Apple News Format. If you are serious about the channel, plan for it.
How the money works on free Apple News
Apple lists three ways a publisher earns from ads, and the terms are specific:
1. Direct sold, 100 percent. "Sell your own ads that run on your Apple News channel(s) and articles, and keep 100 percent of revenue generated from them." 2. Backfill, 70 percent. "Allow Apple to sell ads in your content by enabling backfill in Workbench, and keep 70 percent of the revenue." 3. Pooled, 50 percent. Apple sells ads outside your articles, between stories in the Today feed or in topic feeds such as Fashion and Technology, and "will share 50 percent of the revenue from these ads with Apple News Format channels that have signed up to participate."
For subscription publishers there is a separate route. Apple's News Partner Program is designed for "subscription news publications that provide their content to Apple News in Apple News Format," and publishers may qualify for "a commission rate of 15% on qualifying in-app purchase subscriptions from day one." Eligibility includes maintaining a channel in Apple News Format in Australia, Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom, and having an app on the App Store that sells subscriptions through Apple's in-app purchase system.
Apple News pays through the ads inside your Apple News content. It is built for reading in the app, so judge it on reach and revenue there, not on visits to your site.
Apple News+ is a different deal
Publishers often mix up free Apple News and Apple News+, Apple's paid subscription tier, and the economics are not the same. Free Apple News earns through the ad arrangements above. Apple News+ is a subscription bundle of participating publications, and Digiday has reported that publishers receive 50 percent of Apple News+ subscription revenue, divided by how much time subscribers spend with their content. Apple did not confirm to Digiday whether those terms have changed, so treat the figure as reported rather than published.
What publishers in Apple News+ have said on the record is encouraging for that tier. In a March 2025 Digiday report, The Atlantic called Apple "by far the most valuable syndication partner for The Atlantic," and Dotdash Meredith said Apple News+ revenue and engagement "continue to grow." The same report quoted an executive at a large news publisher describing Apple News ad monetization as "shockingly abysmal." Both can be true, because they describe different tiers and different businesses.
The traffic question
Apple News Format articles are read inside the Apple News app, and the money Apple describes comes from ads shown inside your Apple News channel and articles. That is the model. It is not designed to send readers to your website, so if your business depends on site visits and the ads on your own pages, Apple News will not replace them.
That does not make it a bad channel. It means you measure it by what happens inside Apple News: how many people read your stories there, which topics they follow, and what your Apple News ad and subscription revenue comes to. News Publisher gives you that view, and it belongs next to your other channels in one weekly report, whether you wire it in n8n with an HTTP node per source, run a Make scenario, or schedule a small script against each export.
Who Apple News suits
Apple News suits a publisher with a recognizable brand and a steady stream of quality stories, especially one that can sell its own ads or already runs subscriptions, because those are the arrangements where Apple's terms are strongest. It also suits anyone who wants reach with Apple's audience as one part of a spread, alongside MSN, NewsBreak and the other aggregators in our syndication map.
It suits less well a small publisher whose revenue is display ads on its own site and who has no team to produce Apple News Format. For that publisher, the honest answer is that Apple News offers real reach, but little of it will come back to the website.
Where to go from here
If you want Apple News handled as part of a wider syndication footprint, PIB's Content Syndication Turnkey Management builds and operates distribution across MSN, Yahoo, Apple News, NewsBreak, SmartNews and Flipboard on a revenue share. You keep owning the asset, and you add channels that do not depend on Google. Our guide to syndication monetization explains how the whole layer pays.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get my publication on Apple News?
Register in Apple's News Publisher, create a channel, and submit information about your publication and samples of your content to the Apple News team for review. Apple decides whether to accept the channel.
How much ad revenue do publishers keep on Apple News?
According to Apple, publishers keep 100 percent of revenue from ads they sell themselves, 70 percent when Apple sells ads in their content through backfill, and 50 percent of pooled revenue from ads Apple sells between articles in feeds, for Apple News Format channels that sign up.
Does Apple News send traffic to my website?
Apple News is built for reading inside the app, and Apple's revenue arrangements pay through ads in your Apple News content rather than through visits to your site. If your business depends on site traffic, Apple News will not replace it.
What is the difference between Apple News and Apple News+?
Free Apple News earns publishers money through ads. Apple News+ is Apple's paid subscription tier, and Digiday has reported that publishers receive 50 percent of its subscription revenue based on time spent with their content, though Apple has not published those terms.
Do I need Apple News Format?
Apple's tools and its money-making options are built around Apple News Format, and its News Partner Program requires it in Australia, Canada, the US and the UK. You can publish it through News Publisher, the Apple News API, or a CMS plug-in.

Subscription publishers may qualify for a 15 percent commission rate through the News Partner Program.
